Did you apply “marks” as a criterion for choosing your career and feel that you have made a big mistake and are greatly depressed! Now:
You are generally not satisfied with what you are studying, you try your level best but the teacher’s words make no sense.
- The assignments do not interest you and force yourself to write but you are bored stiff.
- Very little things upset you. Your moods change erratically and you are no longer fun to be around with. You have nothing much to contribute to conversations about your course, not even to gossip.
You may have realized that selected subjects are not your territory and if nothing is making sense, you must reconsider your choice of course. This post tries to help those ‘unsure ‘ students while there is still time! To help them evaluate most appropriate stream & subject and means to do so under CBSE Board (Central Board of Secondary Education)
Are you unhappy with the subjects that you selected last month for your new 9th or 11th classes? Don’t worry, you are not alone to have such self-doubt. Hundreds of students have the same emotions as the first month of their new classes.
Lately, your life had become a roller coaster ride from the anticipation of date sheet to the hard work and stress of Board Exam. It was a wretch that Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) grading system for class 10 students was scrapped by CBSE and your batch had to face Board exam after a gap of 7 years. Then there was the expectation of good result!
After the result, you were thrown headlong into the selection of school and stream! Will it be Science, Commerce or Humanities? At this junctures, there are so many things to consider and a number of decisions to be taken. The entire extended family and friends jumped in with their own opinions and experiences as if it was their own life that was at stake.
In the jamboree, everybody forgot to assess your interest in the subjects. Probably this the reflection of the way careers were decided in the recent past or even today. The students who are high scorers are sure to take Science (PCM or PCB), while the mediocre students are likely to gravitate towards Commerce and the leftover seats went to the remaining students who were expected to settle for Social Sciences, Diploma or ITI. The bias is running still deeper, that the Vocational stream is perceived to be suitable for so-called lower strata.
How wrong this viewpoint is! This attitude is ruining the lives of millions of students like you, who are like square pegs in round holes. This fixation of marks as principal criteria for choosing a career in 9th or 11th is now antiqued and is required to be trashed. Nobody even cares if the course was right for you, as long as it was high on the job market.
After taking that unwanted subject, when students start studying that topics in class 9th and 11th it is very difficult for them to handle those subjects. Sometimes anger, frustration, depression may surround them and those unlucky students find themselves in very difficult emotions. You also begin to visualize yourself in the same situation, which further aggravates your raw emotions. In olden days you probably would have silently borne the mismatch and continued to suffer throughout your life due to a career path mismatch based on the wrong selection of subjects.
Today things are different and many options are available to discover where your vocation or passion in life actually lies. This will cost you only one and a half hour. This one and a half hour will the most important hour of your life. One & half hour of self-discovery will assess you on your IQ, passion, aptitude, personality and much more.
The assessment of most appropriate stream/ subject through online tests can be accessed at www.brainpundits .com
After the assessment of most appropriate stream/ subject through the online test you can now be reassured if your selected stream is suitable for you or some remedial or corrective steps are required. Do confide in your father, mother or some mentor. Then the official process to change subjects can be discussed with the school and initiated. The procedure is applicable for the students of CBSE board which is more about changing the subject (example – from Maths to Biology) and less about changing streams (example – from Social Sciences to Science).
CBSE PROCEDURE FOR MIDSTREAM CHANGE IN SUBJECT:
- A class 11th student may be allowed a change in subject midsession by the School but decision should be made before the 31st of October 2018.
- Change in the subject cannot be made after passing class 11t.
- A subject can be taken in class 10th or 12th only if studied and passed in class 9th and 11th respectively.
- Chairman under special circumstances can allow but before 30th September of the year.
In easy words, the change is easily possible before registration. Now, what is Registration?
CBSE has a system of registration of students admitted in the schools for 12th boards. The registration is usually done in class 11th. Since last Academic Session, it is mandatory to enroll all students on the Board’s portal through online registration. It is the responsibility of the school to register students on the portal which can be an individual entry for less number of students and uploading on board’s excel sheet for bulk registrations.
Your minimum age must conform to age as prescribed by the state/ UT. In sync with the latest identification trend in India, your Adhaar is a must. Your parent’s self-declared income is acceptable and no other paper is likely to be required. In case you are residents of Indian states where Aadhar enrolment is not compulsory you can provide Bank details in lieu of Aadhar. In case you are foreign nationals Passport Number or Social Security Number/ID Number issued by that Foreign Country can suffice.
You must finalize the correct combination of subjects. The subjects are specified in the Board’s Scheme of Studies with a clear list of valid/ invalid combination of subjects. For Example: In class 11th subject Informatics Practice and Computer Science cannot be taken together. You must confirm from your school if they have been permitted to teach same by the Affiliation Unit of the Board. School also should check the combination of subjects before uploading student’s subjects. This is important because in case of any mistake, your candidature can be in danger of cancellation.
The Board has a prescribed Scheme of Studies for Secondary/Sr. Secondary classes, which is available in the curriculum on the website www.cbseacademic.nic.in
Registration process begins tentatively in mid-September and ends by October last.
Coming back to the topic of change or finalisation of subjects……
It is very easy to change from say Hindi to English before registration. Just write an application to your school Principle requesting him/her to change the subject. Before registration everything is under school control, thus your application can be easily accepted. For current batch, the likely dates of registrations can be from late September to about 31st of October. So you still have time to clear your mind, to remove your doubts by seeking online career/ stream selection test and be confident. Care should be taken to be true to yourself for closest possible results.
Let us understand this process through an example….
Suppose you have opted for Commerce stream in the class 11th with a combination of say Accounts, Business Studies, Mathematics, Economics and English subjects. But you face a daily struggle with Mathematics on a constant basis. You are trying your level best to improve your understanding of the subject but are unable to cope with it. The low score worries you and are afraid of how it will impact your overall result and your future admission prospects in professional courses. So, you are justified to change your subject from Mathematics to Hindi in view of overall benefit.
Changing Mathematics to Hindi before registration (i.e, in class 11th) before October last….
However, subject change is not a bed of roses after registration. Your teachers or Principle will decline with a big NO for change in the subject at this late stage. Please don’t get put off by your teachers or principle’s negative and static reply. It may still be possible to change your subject by explaining your plight to the teachers. In this situation, you must convince your school principle to write a letter to your CBSE of your Region. The letter by your principle should be accompanied by a request from your side to change the subject.
For example- you can write…
The Principle (of your school),
Subject- change in subject.
And your principle will recommend the change in subject, in a separate letter addressing the head of your CBSE Region, accompanied by your request addressed as above.
After posting the letter, duly forwarded by your school, just wait for the confirmation from CBSE Regional office. Meanwhile, continue with your wretched subject (Mathematics as in the above case). When the letter will arrive it will grant permission to the change in subject from Mathematics to Hindi. Ensure the effect of the change from Mathematics to Hindi on your Board exam admit card
You deserve the best in life. Please spare one and half hour for this self-assessment. This small capsule of time will become the most important time that you may have devoted for your own welfare. But remember while filling your answers be true to yourself.
