A managerial person who is responsible for multifarious roles in corporate governance. A Law (Company Secretary act 1980) recognized as a class of people who perform executive functions as mandated by the law. The Name company here is a misnomer if you take it literally, the first thought that comes to mind is that they would be staff or secretary or they would be outside their boss’s office checking their appointments and attending calls. Well! let me tell you that this is definitely not the case. In fact, the company secretaries are a critical link between board members, shareholders and regulatory authorities. So, definitely a career as company secretary is a good choice. 

The Company secretary act 1980, India, establishes Institute Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) which certifies and regulates affairs of the Company Secretary. The body holds statutory powers and comes under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. 

But First 

Why ?.. company secretary

It’s a professional course that offers a respectable position. Whereupon your successful completion like engineers(Er.) or doctors (Dr.) you can add Cs. as a prefix in your name. You are an executive managerial position who guides the executive board members and chairman of their responsibilities under various laws. 

From day to day executive business work to maintaining secretarial and statute books, ensuring board meetings go smooth work of an entry-level Company Secretary. Initially or as a fresher, you can expect to get around 30k per month if you are going to go for courses other than professional. Experienced people get around 60k per month.

So, it’s a decent opportunity to earn one’s living.

To become a company secretary:

Get yourself enrolled in ICSI depending upon your educational background.

The good thing is that admission is open throughout the year. The examinations are held twice a year (June and December). From students or aspiring candidates point of view ICSI 

  1. Conducts Examination and awards certification upon passing
  2. Provides 16-month training after completing executive or professional courses.
  3. Provides study material
  4. Have provision for classes (more on that later).

Eligibility – Passing 12th standard or Graduation passed (no minimum criteria only passing)

If you plan to start from 12th standard itself. Then you will have to go through three stages namely 

  • Foundation, 
  • Executive and 
  • Professional program.

All stream students are eligible to apply except Fine Arts (meaning painting, performing arts, etc)

If you are a graduate then you have to go through 2 stages :

  • Executive 
  • Professional

Graduates of all streams except Fine Arts can apply here.

A very important point that all aspirants should know is that only after clearing executive one can pursue Professional Course in ICSI.

What are you taught in a CS course?

Since its a commerce trait, you can expect 

How much time to become a professional CS?

Foundation course (For 12th standard passed)

It depends on you, theoretically, it will take only an examination to complete a foundation course. Just have to clear the exam either in June or December. But you have to register yourself 8 months prior to examination. It has one module only (consisting of 4 subjects).

For Executive course

It has two modules that allow a student to give one module at a time or two modules together. There is no said rule which says you should give one module before others, in fact, you can give in whatever order you may like. However, you should know that filling of the registration process should be 9 months before.

Professional course

Only upon successfully clearing the executive level you are eligible to apply for a professional exam/course. Here, also for registration at least a minimum of 10 months prior should you apply. Here, there are 2 electives that you pass with other mandatory subjects.

After that,

You have to go for 15 months training under a Company Secretary. Which serves as a practical experience mandated by ICSI. But you can also complete this internship upon your completion of your Executive program. Can be during your process of completing executive (but not sure on this)

Then you can register yourself with ICSI as an associate.

An ideal candidate who has cleared within one attempt starting from foundation to training will take about 3.5 to 4 years. 

As a company secretariat,

As an entrant into the industry gets about 30k monthly. There can be a very good chance of getting 40 – 50 k per month but that depends on how many chances you took to clear the exam if got a good rank, type of company, where it is situated, etc.

After that as you get experienced you can earn in lakhs progressively and gradually. 

So, you see it’s a wonderful opportunity.

How many of you believe or are of the opinion that intelligence is equivalent to success. If your answer is yes that intelligent people are successful people. Then I am sorry to break it to you but this is certainly not the case. Though it can be said that intelligent people are more favorable to be successful but there are other factors that determine your success. Have you ever felt that after giving a recruitment test you seem dissatisfied with the outcome since it was not a true representation of your capacity. This has certainly happened to me. Psychometrics are the future of recruitment.

But before that in Malcom Gladwell’s Outliers one pushed to think that intelligence is not the sole determinant of how successful you become in life. That there are other things such as how one deals with authority, their social conditions, age, etc all are to be factored in to understand what makes one successful. Therefore thinking if you are intelligent will make you successful is certainly wishful thinking. 

But, what is Success? Or What does being successful mean?

Before one moves ahead, let’s define what success is. There can be many definitions of success, to each his/her own. But to define materially and spiritually you can safely assume expansion of choices. To explain more simply to attain/afford a good education level (graduate/ post graduate level), a house, a car, a family and health insurance. 

Now, there can be a definition that one imagines him/herself as a commercial pilot, only then he/she considers him/her successful. The contours of success can be goal oriented or ambition sensitive. It can be in terms of what one desires. So, there is no doubt it’s subjective. But you can safely assume the above written in italics as what being successful means for most of us.

In my opinion, there are 3 primary factors that determine your success. (sure there are other factors but for simplistic understanding)

  1. Access to resources (/social conditions)

  2. Your personality 

  3. Your Intelligence/Aptitude

What do one make of these above mentioned factors?

To give you a general idea, access to resources means how much of education can one afford not compounding on problems like food, water and shelter/housing. This means being well off certainly helps one’s case. Your Personality is a very important component which I believe is neglected or poorly assessed by recruiting agencies and other institutes (but more on that later). The aptitude which is primarily assessed through written tests.

Your personality,

Is perhaps the most unaccounted and grossly undervalued when it comes to your overall assessment. Your personality and your aptitude combined gives a better and fuller idea of who you are. When talking about India there are hardly any companies which use psychometric tests to assess personality. Usually there is an interview or in some cases a test and an interview. To classify an interview as an personality assessment can be called a hyperbole. 

Why is personality important ?

Personality is what determines your ability to cope with challenges, present innovative ideas, conflict management, emotional intelligence, cooperation, mental fortitude, grit, social skills, etc. 

Personality is a unique expression. It’s sum total of one’s thoughts and behaviors. Personality explains why some people are more at ease with other people around while others prefer to be alone. It explains why some people are more willing to risk it all than others who would rather play safe. It explains why some people are more mentally strong and others not so. 

What is a psychometric test?

Psychometric tests are psychological tests which are performed to measure and assess a person’s cognitive, affective and behavioral aspects of an individual or differences between individuals.

Other than aptitude Psychometrics measures a person’s dexterity, capacity, psychological aspects. Hence, in terms of overall assessment it beats the conventional aptitude tests and interview on many grounds. These are :

Psychometrics are certainly superior and better than an aptitude test and interview process. In fact in many ways it can help improve the interview process and make it much more transparent and authentic. 

A study,

In the UK (United Kingdom), London School of Economics found out that as much as 70 Percent of the companies use psychometric tests for recruitment purposes. The west uses it why not us (India). Although there are some companies that have started to open up their gates for psychometrics, there is still much to do. Awareness and trust factor are yet to establish in India. 

Importance of psychometrics in India is immense. However, it isn’t being utilized very much. A report published in Economics times published in 2016. 50 % of the companies had admitted to never using psychometrics. One in three never explored it. Willis Tower Watson conducted a study named “The State of psychometrics in India” which found out domestic companies were more inclined to psychometric testing and MNC’s in India avoided it. 

This points to the fact that Small – Medium Companies are likely to try psychometrics. There may be a reason for MNCs not going for psychometrics because they may have their own aptitude tests (or maybe psychometrics in few cases) which are standardized. However, it’s a misconception that MNCs don’t require Psychometrics In fact in specific job roles an aptitude test followed by an interview is a poor tool to find a suitable talent. In conventional ways of recruitment by MNCs which can be easily bypassed through adequate training. However, psychometrics can be standardized to find inconsistencies and veracity of responses. 

Personality plays a very important role in job profiles. Finding the right personality is far more important than a person higher in aptitude. It may well be the case where you find yourself with a person possessing the aptitude but poor in work performance. What psychometrics does is that it provides adequate assessment over personality (traits- behavioral), aptitude and intelligence.

Leader Vs Manager, Who are you ?

Often what we see,observe or come across terms such as Leaders and Managers. To come to think of it they become hard to describe or usually would find overlapping descriptions. No doubt in both leaders and managers there are overlapping areas, but, there are points of distinction too.  

 

As per my knowledge this is a popular question asked in the interviews for jobs and getting into top MBA colleges. Also, it would be better to know which suits you the best, are you a leader or a manager?

 

Leaders and Managers are both important in their respective fields. There is a grey area where many qualities of a leader match with that of a manager and vice versa.

 

There are people who might be good managers but would not be good leaders. Also there would be good leaders who would not be as good a manager.

 

The article focuses on distinctions between the two. 

Leaders are simply understood as those who will lead the way. You can understand Gandhiji as a leader who essentially had led Indian freedom struggle against Colonialism in India.

Leaders, as the quote mentions are those who inspires others. Certain bit of positive connotation attached to the word. It gives a sense of hope and inspiration whenever the word is uttered or mentioned anywhere. 

 

What’s interesting is that word itself is associative and attributive. Meaning whenever you hear the word ‘leader’ either a leader pops up in your head or a quality. Example, it could be Nelson Mandela or Gandhi ji. A quality can also pop up in your head like self sacrificing/ responsible etc.

 

To have a better idea and to illuminate on what attributes do Leaders possess. Let us look at signs and attributes that are generally accepted as qualities that Leaders display.

Psychometric in Corporate Environment

As a manager, when you hire someone new in the organization, do you think to yourself how long will they last? This is a very common problem which corporates and startups both face alike. Hiring is perhaps still an art rather than science.

It all boils down to the fact that dealing with people is unlike dealing with machines as people are unpredictable, they lie and they are constantly under stress and pressure.

What’s even more astounding is the fact that humans are very difficult to benchmark. This is very true if you accept the statement that marks don’t reflect intelligence.

Traditional ways of measuring human potential i.e. Aptitude is slowly losing its authenticity & charm. It doesn’t account for the practice effect which simply means that practicing for an aptitude test causes an improvement in score. This means that it is not a great indicator of cognitive thinking.

There are other indicators for measuring human potential that can work better for the traditional office settings. I am talking of course of personality and interest testing. It measures those traits of a human which are essential for him/her to do a particular job or task.

All these tests; personality, aptitude, interest, and intelligence are collectively called psychometric testing (psycho: meaning mind, and metric: meaning measure)
