This is the age of instant information. We are bombarded by news, information of various kinds from different spheres – especially on the internet. But this has led to the rise of false information and fake news being propagated easily to rile up people’s sentiments and fooling them.

Hence, it is very important to know how to sift out the real from the fake. It is important because misinformation leads to false beliefs and false realities. While there’s always room for subjected ways of living but false information, which is actually leading to deaths in certain cases is extremely wrong and doesn’t bode well for democracy.

So, it is not only our duty to be a well-informed citizen but also imperative for us to expose false information. Here are 8 tips to navigate information on the Internet.

Fact-Checking

You might have heard this phrase “fact-checking”, it is a very recent phenomenon. There are actual people who are working as full-time fact checkers. These fact-checkers debunk every false misinformation that gets viral on the internet.

In India, you can check out sites like “Alt-News”, Boomlive, “Smhoaxslayer”, which conduct through fact-checking and help expose misinformation. So, whenever you get that forward on your WhatsApp about something that seems odd, better to fact-check it first.

Lateral Reading

One key method you should adopt while navigating the internet is the concept of Lateral Reading. Lateral reading simply means that whenever you want to search for any kind of news on the internet, do not focus on one source of information. Rather, open up another site on a new tab and search for more credible sources of information on the same thing.

For example, if you want to know about climate change in detail, don’t stick to just one website for information rather open up more websites. This helps you in sifting out what is being said across the board on an issue, in this case, Climate Change.

Going to Trustworthy Sources

You also need to have a bunch of trustworthy sources for news and information that are credible. Although almost everyone has some kind of bias involved despite the prevalence of bias there are certain news websites and news agencies that you know you can trust.

For example, my trustable sites are – The Hindu, Indian Express, BBC, New York Times, Reuters.

Using Wikipedia

Now, we all have heard it from almost everyone – that we should not use Wikipedia for our source of information. Their reasons come from the fact that Wikipedia can be edited by almost anyone.

But that’s not really the case. Wikipedia is actually a pretty good source of information of one thing as a lot of contributors contribute to it. You should use Wikipedia as a part of the lateral reading we suggested. There are various pages in Wikipedia, that are actually locked that can’t be edited by anyone and is moderated by moderators.

The trick of using Wikipedia is to check the sources, which every page has at the end of it. The credibility of the sources gives credibility to that particular wiki page.

Evaluating Evidence

Now, suppose if you were to find some information about Climate Change which says that is not happening and it gives certain evidence. The best way to check is to verify that evidence – by doing a lateral reading.

You open up other credible websites to see if that information or evidence is credible or not. So, by doing this you will eventually find out that the evidence given is fake.

Evaluating Photos

So, you encounter a photo on your WhatsApp or Facebook which seems highly implausible. How do you check the veracity of it? How do see if it is a fake or not?

Well, the simplest way is to do a reverse google search of that image. You take that photo and go to Google images and upload it and search it. It will reverse search to see where that image has been previously used or not. This way you can check the veracity of that photo.

Evaluating Data and Infographics

You often hear or read on the news about some research conducted on chocolate being healthy for your body. Then you try to find things on the internet to check and you find various kinds of data and infographics. How to know what is reliable?

Well, this is the trickiest part to do but there are ways to check it. First, you will need to go the study cited in that news or in that infographic. Second, after finding that study – go through their methodology and sample size. You can also check it by in which journal is it published and the level citations.

Now, these all are rather tricky to for a normal individual but if you can follow this technique then you can see the way people use statistics to fool people. As it is said there are “Lies, then there are damned lies, and then there are damned statistics”.

Click Restraint

Finally, you need to practice Click restraint. This means don’t jump to clicking every salacious websites out there. The google search that you do has a lot of options on the page, and we have a habit of clicking the very first two links.

Which is a wrong way as just because they are the first links, doesn’t mean that they are the most reliable or even worth the click. They have sensational headings or sub-headings made in a way to make you click them. These are called Click-baits.

The best way is to go through the entire first page of google search and then decide on what to click and what not to. You can also go to the second page, although I know you may have never done that.

To Conclude

So, these are 8 essential tips to use while navigating information in the age of the internet. It is very important as we all need to aware of actual information and need to stop falling to fake news and false information online. This is a battle we all must face and fight. Till then cheers, and keep exploring yourself with Brainpundits!

So, first of all, I’ll answer these string of questions that and then provide you these beneficial ways to develop a hobby.

Our first question is what are the benefits of developing a hobby

  1. A hobby can be a great companion in free times
  2. Will give you a sense of productivity and saves you with the feeling of guilt of wasting time
  3. Polishes your creative side
  4. Can add skill in your skillset

In this article, we will discuss 5 extremely easy ways to develop a hobby. Let’s jump to our next question what it can fetch for us?

5 Extremely Easy Ways to Develop a Hobby

  1. It helps us to cope up with the work stress by disengaging you with regular work and stressful environments
  2. Having a hobby can fetch you mindfulness as you are doing what you really like in the phase of pursuing a hobby
  3. Your physical health also gets affected by not having a hobby. A hobby can make you stress-free and keeping happy.

So these are the few reasons that you should take in consideration and develop a hobby for yourself.

Now I am going to discuss here the key steps to develop a hobby and experience its benefits

  1. Scavenging past

By putting insights on the things that you left in past due to reasons like not having time for that activity or had lost the partner for that particular activity or due to lack of guidance or due to particular health problem now its time to take out those activities from the past again and start looking for the right partner, guidance and approach in the direction to make it a hobby. It could be anything from running, swimming, badminton, painting, singing, table tennis.

I found my hobby just like that too by remembering the incident of basket court that happened three years ago before I found my hobby. I was playing in the court for straight up 1 hour in 45 degrees summer, of course, it was surely giving me something that time the reason because I am heating up myself in ruthless summer.

Later on, I made this my hobby and after a few years due to endurance and stamina that basketball provided me I made running my other hobby.

  1. Keep on trying things

Maybe many of us are not able to scavenge their past and the reason why they left these activities is that they seem boring to them. But they should not feel sad about them we have a solution for them too. They should start being alert of themselves and how they are spending their time, for example

  1. What they are watching most of the times in tv or reading in magazines (thriller, drama, action, sport ) and through that, they can develop the hobby of reading and writing the same genre which will increase their knowledge of vocabulary and can also fetch money in the free time by writing.
  2. Trying different activities like cooking, exploring new places, trying different sports can also help you in planning a hobby in your life.

  1. Associating with the same peer group

Now after this phase of finding a hobby it is very important to stay motivated for it and pursue it for a long time so that it ll not again get lost in past. For that, you can find different clubs, associations, and vocational centers for these, where you can find peers associated to the same sport or art.

This will boost your confidence and give you a sense of affiliation, which would further help you in pursuing your hobby in a much better way.

  1. Easy everything out

While pursuing your hobby you should not fall under the time constraints or thinking much about improving yourself in that, just sail by the breeze. Always keep in mind that you are doing that because you like it, and approach it with a happy and free mind. Do not burn out or get stressy during the process.

  1. The change you want

Sit with yourself for some days, take insight about you from yourself and think what kind of person you want to see in yourself and hurrah! You found your hobby. A dancer, a marathon runner, a DJ, a swimmer, a writer whatever insight you get from inside of you, go get up and work in that direction. Some people might have a hard time doing idle work that serves no purpose other than being fun.

You know that feeling: When you’re out at the movies or enjoying a long shopping trip, and you think “I really should be doing X instead.” If you’re always on the move and trying to hit a goal or better yourself, make your hobby fit that criteria. Pick one up that will help you change for the better.

Mark Manson, self-improvement blogger suggested asking yourself this in-your-face question, “What is true about you today that would make your 8-year-old self cry?” Meaning, what have you stopped doing just because it stopped being lucrative or adult responsibilities got in the way. Then, go after it. Chances are it’ll give you a new sense of purpose.

Conclusion

They help themselves and others so that they can do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, a directive path and create something new. While Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring. Leadership basically allow a person to take a strongly driven charge and lead its team, co-workers or colleagues in the right direction. But what is a leader?

Leader

You may have heard this phrase a lot of times “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”. It is a famous quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which defines a gives a definition of the leader. Famous personalities also come to your mind when you think about leaders. For instance, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, or other world-famous leaders in history. Or perhaps there are leaders in your own life that have had a positive impact on you. What skills did all of these people have that made them effective leaders? Here are a few of them

A Leader is:

  • Committed to a Vision or Mission
  • Understands His or Her Role
  • Demonstrates Integrity
  • Sets an Example
  • Understands How to Motivate the Behavior of Others
  • Communicates Effectively
  • Willing to Take Risks
  • Is Adept at Problem-Solving

Leadership and workplace

Leadership generally involves these four prospects when applied to the workplace: –

  • Establishing a clear vision,
  • Sharing that motivating and inspiring vision with others so that they will follow willingly.
  • Providing information, knowledge, and methods to realize that vision.
  • Coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholders.

Establishing a clear vision

In business, a vision is a realistic, convincing and attractive picture of where you want to take your organization or team in the future. Vision provides direction, sets priorities, and provides a trail to your projects so that you can tell that you’ve achieved what you wanted to achieve. So, a vision strongly defines your leadership and its outcome. It combines the analytical side, in terms of vision creation with the passion of shared values, and simultaneously creating something meaningful for the people involved.

Motivating and Inspiring

A compelling vision provides the foundation for leadership. But it’s leaders’ ability to motivate and inspire people with that vision which helps them deliver that vision. For example, at the start of any project, one needs to instill inspiration for the teammates to follow in order to realize the vision.

Delivering and managing that vision

A compelling vision and an enthusiastic team are not enough, maybe they are the foundation stones to get done the projector to solve a problem, but real leadership skills lies in managing and delivering the vision that you created. A good leader must ensure that the work required to deliver the vision is managed and also need to ensure that the vision is realized successfully.

Team Building

After thinking about how to manage and deliver the vision the next ladder is to provide proper and precise coaching to achieve that task. Individual and team development are important activities carried out leaders to achieve the desired task and get the work done in the required team frame. Here the real tedious work of leaders come into play, to assess the strong and weak aspects of colleagues around him or her and then collect them into a team. Leaders must know about team dynamics in order to run a smooth ship.

How you can improve your leadership skills to become a better leader.

Here I am going to mention three traits by adding them to your life you can easily improve your leadership skills. These traits I am going to mention is a must have in any leader whether it could relate to community leadership, religious leadership, political leadership, and leadership of campaigning groups.

Three Essential Traits

Without any doubt, there are three traits that every leader must have in order to be successful and achieve a milestone in leadership. These are essential traits without which you will not be an effective leader. So, what are these three required traits?

First is the desire to lead. In absence of it, you will never be comfortable and looks fit in the leader role. You will struggle with things on a daily basis, and your team members will sense thing in your overall outlook. So the desire is to lead is essential otherwise you might feel burnt out and your team members will not feel motivated to do any work. This might lead them to leave the office or force you to quit.

The second trait of successful leaders is a commitment to the mission and vision of the organization where they work. First, imagine how hard it could be trying to convince people to follow a mission that you yourself do not commit to. It would be a difficult task. So, first, in order to inspire other people to follow your mission, you need to fully commit to the mission and the vision and manifest it in your personality.

The final trait that leadership requires is integrity. It means doing what you say you will do and behaving the way that you expect your team to behave. At first glance, that may sound simple enough. But if you can truly master integrity, you will find that it changes whole teams and even whole organizations for the better.

To Conclude

So overall leadership may be something that one is born with but that doesn’t mean you cannot learn and acquire skills to become one. You can start by taking one of our tests to know yourself better, which can help you develop your skills. Till then cheers and be awesome!

How to Read a book for exam?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Books are gateways to understanding language, exploring ideas, improving linguistic cognition and increasing imagination. However, many times we forget what we read. We all wish that we could get more out what we read. This becomes apparent when we either should read a book to prepare for test or work on self-development goals or improve ourselves.

Be it any case we all wish to get more out books we read. Here some hacks to get most of what we read in the first time itself.

1.    Reading a book entails most importantly what you want to get out it. So, ask yourself what are your topics and areas of concern which you have currently embarked on. Write it down on a piece of paper. If you don’t know where to begin a good place to start would be previous years’ test papers.

2.    Read the preface and index very carefully to see topics and areas of concern are matching list you just wrote. Now, mark the topics given in the list in the book you are wanting to read.

3.    Understand what must be done first. Number the list in form of priority of what must be done first. If no such priority is there then read from the initial topic that is marked in the book.

4.    Read with pencil not marker as with a pencil you can write on the book there itself. Underline what you feel is important for your exam. If terms aren’t explained well then write meanings of those terms, there itself between spaces given in the text. One can use arrows to highlight super important terms or concepts.

5.    Use of stick notes to highlight important topics or highlight important chapters. This essentially allows one to visit the important chapters and concepts during exam time.

6.    Make short notes of the facts and details which are useful for examination. So that your revision of facts and details are crisp and fast which will allow you to retain more facts.

7.    After going through the book one time. You now have underlined what is important, written important details in between text, used stick notes to highlight important concepts and chapters and written most of the facts as short notes. Now you must prioritize and revise accordingly.

This is how your book should be looking after reading it:

This will allow you ease of access and strengthen your ability to grasp more out of the book your reading. Next time when you’re in need to revise or go back to book to look for essential information, you can easily get it as you know where to find what you are looking for.
