What After 10th? The SOCH Approach

We all go through the moment when we start our 10th class and feel a certain unease. This unease is about the future that is getting nearer as you approach your 10th exams. I remember when I cleared my 10th, I was confused about which stream to choose out of the options available.

Although some of my friends seemed clear about what they wanted to choose as a stream there were some like me who were confused about what is the right stream.

If you feel the same way now, then worry not as through this article, I will try to ease your confusion and help you understand not only the streams available but also what might be the right stream for you with the use of the SOCH approach. But what first what is the SOCH approach all about?

SOCH – Stats-Objects-Concepts-Humans

Stats

SOCH is the acronym that we at Brainpundits have come up with about four dominant inclinations that we, as people, may have.

These are

  • S-tats (good with data, numbers, facts and figures),
  • O-bjects (good with machines, tools, and new technology),
  • C-oncepts (good in dealing with abstract concepts and being original)
  • H-umans (the more people-oriented person who is comfortable with interacting with people and maintaining interpersonal relations).

While I have for now given a very basic understanding of each dimension so that you can easily understand it but it’s a far more complicated and denser concept with various indicators of each dimension, to bring out the best result. All of us have these dimensions, but out of these foursomes are more dominant than others. Using the SOCH-Approach, I will show you how each stream can be understood under this ingenious approach.

Humanities and Social Sciences

Social Sciences or arts and humanities is a major category of discipline that studies societies and human relationships within these societies.

It includes subjects like Economics, Political Science, Sociology, History, Geography, Psychology, and Linguistics.

It’s a very vast field of knowledge and at their core, if one believes in knowing and understanding other people’s problems in the society than all other things, then this might be a stream for you. If you feel your empathetic to people’s feelings and also comfortable in maintaining interpersonal relationships well then you are a good counselor in waiting, and through this stream, you could become one.

This falls within the Human dimension of the overall SOCH approach. Apart from this, this stream would be ideal if you have a strong combination with Humans with Concepts, a dimension which tells you about your ability to think of original and novel ideas.

This stream requires people who are comfortable dealing with abstract notions and coming up with intuitive reasoning to solve problems.

The types of jobs that this stream has ranged from a career in academics, i.e. in research and teaching to a psychologist or a counselor to research analyst at various research centers in India. The nature of jobs in this stream is dependent upon your specialization in a particular subject.

For example, a specialization in history would open your doors to being a historian or an archaeologist, on the other hand, a specialization in geography would mean a job as a geologist, a remote sensing expert etc.

Commerce

Another stream that is an option after your 10th is commerce. The core subjects in commerce are Economics, Mathematics, Business Studies, Accountancy, and an additional subject. The stream revolves around the study of business, trade, and finance.

It broadly covers the study of exchange of economic activities within a country. Under the SOCH approach, it would be a good choice for you if you have a strong bent towards the Stats dimension. As this field requires you to be excellent in dealing with data, numbers, stats, figures etc.

If you feel you have a knack paying close attention to details and keeping things organized then this stream may be well suited for you.

This stream is ideal for those who want to join jobs in the field of accounts, finance, and the overall banking sector.

The popular and most lucrative job options in this field are Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Actuarial Science, Management etc. Most of these jobs are highly lucrative with very good packages.

Science – Non-Medical

The overall stream of science is almost all are familiar with. As we grow older we keep hearing about two staple jobs of India – Engineer and Doctor, both of these jobs are the ones that are an option from this stream.

This section is about non-medical which has core subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (along with English and an additional subject). In this stream, one gets to study about the natural and physical world in detail. In the case of people who opt for PCM, the main jobs revolve around the mass engineering industry.

You should also know that there are various types of engineering – from civil, mechanical, electronics, computers etc. Under the SOCH approach people who have a bent towards Objects and Stats, i.e. who love working with tools, and new technologies, would be better suited for this option within the science stream.

If you love working with machines and seem to have a scientific bent of mind, i.e. following a scientific approach in solving issues then it’s the right stream for you.

The types of jobs within this field largely fall under the engineering industry. If you love computers and working on them then you could go into software engineering.

Or if you love cars then mechanical or automobile engineering is another option. But apart from engineering other options that are available in this stream are of Architecture, Aviation, and of course further research in Theoretical Physics.

Science – Medical

The other option within the science stream is of Biology (the rest of the subjects are same as in non-medical). This stream revolves around, again the study of the natural and physical world but the later job opportunities mainly revolve around the dominant field of Health Services.

Under the SOCH approach, this stream would best suit people who have a strong bent towards Stats and Humans. As people who love working with facts and figures but also care and understand the needs of others.

It is a complex combination of data and empathy. The reason being people who want to solve big medical problems of human life, with the help of science, would need to have an inclination towards paying close attention to minute details and working in a systematic manner.

Furthermore, since human life is at the center of this stream you should also be able to place importance on other people’s feelings and problems ahead of your own.

While the most famous job profile within this stream is, of course, the profession of the Doctor (MBBS, MD). But there are also various other jobs within this stream that you can do for example a Botanist (also called phytologist) who studies plants in detail or a zoologist. There are other job options available in Pharmacology, Biotechnology, Nutritionist, and others.
