Top Competitive Exams in India

Each year in India, various government competitive exams for vacancies across departments in various sectors are held. These exams are given by people in millions every year. And there are a lot of them. In this article, we’ll try to cover most of all of them. Yes, almost all of them so you can have an authoritative list to refer to. So, let’s get started.

 

Exams for Administrative Bases Posts

First, let’s talk about the various exams that are for posts in the various administrative posts throughout central and state governments.

Civil Services

First and foremost is the Civil Service Examination, which is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year. It is considered one of the toughest exams but also the most rewarding as if you clear it then you get to join the prestigious Indian Administrative Services.

After you clear this, depending on your rank you get a posting in one of the various Central administrative posts. The deadline for this year’s exam is 18th March 2019 and education requirement is Graduation from any background.

 

Engineering Services

UPSC also conducts a highly competitive exam for entry into Indian Engineering Services. The forms usually come around the time Civil Services forms come out. Students from engineering background are eligible for this exam. If you clear the exam then you get to work in central engineering departments that take up central projects etc.

 

Forest Services

Another prestigious All India Services exam conducted by UPSC is for the Indian Forest Services. For this, you’ll need to have your bachelor’s with either of these subjects – animal husbandry, veterinary, biology, chemistry, geography, maths, physics, agriculture, forestry.

After you clear the exam you get to become officers in state forest departments. The deadline for this year’s exam is again 18th March 2019.

 

Indian Statistical/Economic Services

Next up is Indian Statistical or Economic services. For this, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree with statistics and economics or applied economics in it. The deadline for this exam is 16th April 2019.

 

Combined Medical Services

Another very important exam that UPSC conducts is in medical services. It is called the Combined Medical Services. To be eligible for this exam you need to have cleared your final exam in MBBS. For this, the last date of applying is 6th May 2019.

 

State Public Commissions

Apart from UPSC conducting exams for administrative posts, almost all the state governments also have their own State Public Service Commissions which conducts exams for these post in their respective states. The notification for these exams varies from state to state so you will need to keep a lookout for them.

 

SSC-CGL Exam

We also have another important exam conducted by SSC (Staff Selection Commission), that is the CGL (Combined Graduate Level) exam. It is conducted every year and has multiple levels. A graduate from any subject can give this exam.

The type of jobs that you can get through this exam are: Income tax officer, or become a customs officer or become an excise inspector and various other posts.

 

DEFENSE SERVICES

Moving on to recruitment in the defense services that also happens every year.

NDA-NA Exam

First up is the NDA-NA exam which is conducted by the UPSC. You can take this exam of after your 12th exam. Once you clear the overall exam, you get either admitted to the prestigious NDA (National Defense Academy) in Pune or in IMA (Indian Military Academy) in Dehradun.

The age limit for this exam is between 16 and 19 years of age. The deadline usually comes in the month of February. This year’s deadline is 4th February 2019.

 

CDS Exam

If you somehow missed the change of getting into Defense services via the NDA-NA exam then you can also give the CDS (Combined Defense Services) exam. You can give this after your graduation. The age limit for this is between 20 and 24 years.

The notification usually comes twice a year so keep a look out as this is another way to get into the Indian Defense services.

 

CAPF Exam

The CAPF exam (Central Armed Police Forces) is also another opportunity for everyone to serve in the various honorable border forces that guard the sovereignty of our nation. Through this test, posts are open in Assam Rifles, CRPF, BSF, CISF, NSG and ITBP.

You need to be a graduate to apply for this. And the deadline for this year is around 20th May 2019.

If you want to join the prestigious Indian Air Force, then this exam is for you. AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) is an exam conducted by the Air Force to admit candidate as commissioned officers in flying, the technical and non-technical staff of the Air-Force.

The age limit is between 20 and 24 years of age. And the application notification comes around in October, so keep a look out!

 

BANKING SECTOR

 

Now, we move to recruitment in the Banking Sector. In the banking sector, there are various PO (Probationary Officers) and Clerical exams for these posts conducted by various Public Sector banks like Canara, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and various others.

But the most number of posts that come out are from the SBI and IBPS. Most posts require you to be a graduate from any subject. The age may vary but usually, it should be between 21-30 years of age. And the notifications keep coming out so keep a look out!

 

RBI

There are also various posts within the highest Banking authority in India, Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The notifications for this keep coming throughout the year so you’ll have to keep a lookout. The age limit and education requirements vary from each post, so do keep that in mind.

 

Insurance Sector

There are also various recruitment exams conducted various Public Insurance Companies like LIC and NICL. The requirement here is also graduation in any stream. The notification dates for these also vary, so keep an eye out for them.

 

NABARD

There are also numerous posts in the NABARD (National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development). The posts vary as it depends on the changing requirement and can range from assistant manager to regional clerks and among others. The notification will come later this year in 2019.

First up, is the career of the Merchant Navy. For this, the test is called AIMNET and anyone can apply who have done their 12th exam and also final year graduate students can also apply. The career of a Merchant Naval Officer is staying at the seas for a long duration. It can be challenging but if you think you are up for some adventures in seas, then this could be for you.

 

GATE Exam

You could also give the GATE exam if you are from an engineering background. If you get a good score then various PSU’s (Public Sector Units) like SAIL, ONGC, Power Grid, NTPC etc can all you up based on your score or you can apply there. You’ll need to have a B.E. or a B.Tech. degree for you to apply for the GATE exam. The notifications usually come in the month of October.

 

School Teacher

If you want to become a teacher in various govt schools throughout India then you’d need to give the CTET (Central Teaching Eligibility Test) exam. If you clear this test, then you are eligible to be a teacher in all of the govt schools in India. You also need to have, apart from graduation, a degree in B.Ed (Bachelor in Education).

 

College or University Professor

If you want to become a professor in the various colleges and universities in India, you’ll have to clear the NET-JRF exam conducted by the newly formed NTA (National Testing Agency).
After you clear this exam, you are eligible to be an Assistant Professor in colleges in India.

Now, those who are space enthusiasts out there and want to work with the prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) then there’s good news for you. ISRO also conducts its own recruitment test for those who want to work in Space Technology. In most posts, B.Tech. is necessary for this. The notifications keep coming up in for different posts so keep a checkout.

 

Working with BARC

Similarly, there is BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), another esteemed research body which conducts its own test for those who want to go into atomic research or even become nuclear scientists.

There are various posts within the center and the requirement varies but for each, a Master’s degree is required in subjects relating to Physics, Chemistry, and other core sciences subjects. In certain fields, B.Tech. is a requirement. The notifications also vary from post to post so keep a check out for this.

Now, we come to a test that may not directly give you a job but if you clear it and get a very good score, chances are you will get a high paying job. We are talking about the CAT (Common Aptitude Test) exam which is given by students from all stream backgrounds.

Clearing this test means getting admission into top business schools of India. Those who get very high score manage to get admissions in the famous IIM’s schools and other famous schools like FMS. Graduates from these business school more often than not get a very high paying job.

 

Indian Railways

We shift our focus to one of the biggest recruiters in the world – The Indian Railways. Railways Recruitment Board conducts its recruitment exam every year for various posts to offer. In a recent call for posts, there are around 14 thousand opening in various positions! Have a look at the latest notification and apply.
