What is a Fellowship?

Fellowship, by the name itself suggests an affiliation or association. Fellowships are usually given by Higher Academic Institutions, Research society or other Bodies to conduct research and quality work in particular fields or field of their choice.

Who can pursue Fellowship ?

The academic qualifications serve as eligibility in getting a Fellowship. On the other hand the Institute provides for a fellowship program. This program qualifies as work experience and in many cases provide for remuneration. The fellowships are different from scholarships and internships. Though all three are more or less similar. In short, the Scholarships are monetary but fellowships and internship may or may not provide for monetary benefits. 

Difference Between Fellowship and Scholarship?

Like mentioned earlier the fellowships are association with the University or Research body. Firstly Fellowships are made available whereas scholarships awarded. Secondly, the fellowships are given to people who are interested in doing research whereas scholarships are given to students.

Who awards fellowship?

In India there are many fellowships programs. These Fellowships are given by society/trust, educational body, research body, etc. In India fellowships are provided by Academic institutions, Government bodies and Trusts to encourage research and development. 

 

Here are some scholarships:

 

A fellowship by Ashoka University. A multidisciplinary Post Graduate Diploma program. YIF is a one-year residential multi-disciplinary post graduate programme which provides Liberal arts education with a focus on experiential learning. The recruits are taught from wide subjects like Economics, Statistics, Art, Business, International relations etc. 

Duration : 1 year

Age limit : 28 years

 

SBI (State Bank of India) started this program in 2011. The Fellowship program essentially encompasses rural development programs. The SBI partners with many NGOs to connect with rural development and grassroot level. The fellows based on their interests are tied up with an NGO which works together through a 13 month program.

Duration : 13 months

Age limit : 21 – 32 years

Stipend/Remuneration (monthly) : 16,000 (on completion one gets 40,,000 INR)

 

The fellowship which essentially provides graduates an opportunity to teach in schools which have inadequate facilities. As a fellow one addresses not only the teaching aspect but also the infrastructural aspects also. In many cases one can see him/herself administering a school. The fellowship started in 2007, draws inspiration from Teach for America. Upon Joining 5 week residential training is provided.

Duration : 2 year (minimum)

Age limit : Not specified 

Eligibility : Graduation (minimum)

Remuneration : 20,000 INR monthly

 

A program designed to transform learners into effective leaders. Further the program is backed/Funded By Piramal Foundation (Kaivaliya Education Foundation). 

The programs provides for rigorous training and make fellows competent in 7 values being : Awareness, Collaborative Work, Excellence, Influence without Authority, Value Articulation, Risk Taking / Entrepreneurship and Articulation of Private Dream. The fellowship provides opportunities such as organizing an ideal morning assembly, increasing student enrollment, improving the mid-day meal system, organizing School Monitoring Committee (SMC), mobilizing community participation and improve the quality of student learning.

Duration : 23 months

Remuneration : 15,000 INR monthly (approx.)

 

The Fellowship is provided by the Center for Social Justice.  The program teaches fellows to develop a holistic understanding of how grassroots legal empowerment plays a catalytic role in bringing social change. However, the Fellowship Program is only for Legal professionals and Law graduates (/currently doing).

Duration : 2 years

Remuneration : 25,000 INR monthly

 

A 10-month volunteer program that pairs a select number of young professionals from the U.S. and India with NGOs and social enterprises in India in order to accelerate impact and create effective projects that are replicable, scalable, and sustainable. 

The volunteer upon initiation into fellowship program applies to a maximum of three projects. After that the AIF (American India Foundation) and its partner interview and selects fellows on basis of Fellow’s interests and Project’s goal.

Duration – 10 months

Remuneration : Stipend given (exact amount not disclosed)

 

They are fellows who are mentored by the Member of parliaments. These Fellows are assisted by various Think Tanks, Academicians and NGOs to work on Public Policy and Development. Most Importantly the programs starts with monsoon session of parliament and ends with follows on till the Budget session (successive). Subsequently, the fellows are provided rigorous one month training. 

The fellows are selected through process where on submits application and post scrutiny Interview is conducted for final selection. 

Duration : 10 months

Stipend : 20,000 INR Monthly

 

International Innovation Corps is a program led by a Haris school of public policy at the University of Chicago. Subsequently, Indian Universities also participate in the program. The program seeks to improve educational, economical, technological improvements at the grassroots level.

The project work starts at 30th July. However, the exact duration of the fellowship is not mentioned. Since its annual program, may be one year.

Eligibility : Undergraduates and above

Stipend : Not mentioned

 

The fellowship program is an initiative of the parent organisation (i.e Art of living NGO of Shri Ravi Shankar). The fellowship offers opportunities to work as teacher, provide medical assistant in camps, work in an orphanage, Awareness drives and be a part of rehabilitation projects. As they mention, most of their work is centered in Kolkata and Bangalore. The fellowship work is social work and development work. 

Eligibility: Graduates (or Undergraduates) (= college going)

Stipend : 10,000 – 12,000 INR monthly

 

The fellowship program is organised by Azim PremJi Foundation. The Fellowship program is essentially a Rural School Development program. In this program on manages, administers and teaches. Subsequently the program requires good understanding of the local language (where one would be posted). The foundations runs program in 6 states and UTs. However,  the Dead line of this year has already passed (on July 31st). Can apply for next year’s program.

Eligibility : 3/ 4 year work Experience minimum

Below 35 years of age

Salary : 35,000 INR Monthly (+ Insurance)

So, these were top 10 Fellowships in India. Firstly they provide a wonderful opportunity and credible work experience. Above all one contributes for the well being of the Nation.
